Bleach Safety: Dilution, Storage, and What Never to Mix

Short answer: handle bleach (sodium hypochlorite) safely by treating it as the hazardous chemical it is — dilute it fresh per the label, store it cool and away from acids, use ventilation and PPE, and never mix it with ammonia or acids, which release toxic gas. Bleach is the most common disinfectant in shelters and one of the most misused: it's corrosive, it loses potency over time, and the wrong combination is genuinely dangerous. Here's how to dilute, store, and label it correctly.

It's a hazardous chemical — treat it like one

Bleach carries a "Danger" signal word and the corrosion pictogram. It can cause skin and eye damage and irritate the respiratory tract. That means it needs an SDS on file, a labeled container (including any secondary spray bottle you fill), and staff training — the same as any other hazardous product.

Dilution: follow the label, and make it fresh

Use the dilution and contact time on the product's label or your veterinarian's/health authority's disinfection protocol for the pathogen you're targeting — concentrations differ for general cleaning versus parvovirus or panleukopenia. Two universal rules: never assume "more is better" (excess bleach is corrosive and wasteful, not more effective), and mix fresh — diluted bleach loses disinfecting strength within about a day, so prepare what you'll use that shift rather than storing old dilutions.

Gloves and eye protection at minimum; ensure good ventilation when using it in enclosed spaces like isolation wards or bathrooms. Section 8 of the SDS gives the specifics for the product you stock.

Never mix bleach with…
